Yami Gautam Dhar (born Yami Gautam on 28 November 1988) is an Indian actress predominantly known for her work in Hindi films. She is the daughter of Punjabi film director Mukesh Gautam and began her career as a model before transitioning to television, starring in shows like Chand Ke Paar Chalo (2008–2009) and Yeh Pyar Na Hoga Kam (2009–2010). Her Bollywood debut came with the 2012 comedy-drama Vicky Donor, which won her the Zee Cine Award for Best Female Debut.

Gautam gained recognition for her roles in thrillers such as Badlapur (2015) and Kaabil (2017). She achieved greater success with Uri: The Surgical Strike and Bala in 2019. She also starred in several streaming films, including Bhoot Police (2021), A Thursday (2022), Dasvi (2022), and Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga (2023). Her recent hits include OMG 2 (2023) and Article 370 (2024).

Early Life

Yami Gautam was born in Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh, and raised in Chandigarh. Her father, Mukesh Gautam, is a Punjabi film director and the VP of PTC Network. Her mother is Anjali Gautam. Yami has a younger sister, Surilie Gautam, who debuted in the Punjabi film Power Cut, and a younger brother, Ojas Gautam. Initially aspiring to join the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), she switched to acting at age 20. She left her studies in Law Honors to pursue her acting career, but is currently completing her graduation part-time in Mumbai. Yami enjoys reading, interior decoration, and music.

Personal Life

Yami dated her Sanam Re co-star Pulkit Samrat from 2015 to 2018. She married filmmaker Aditya Dhar on 4 June 2021 and adopted the name Yami Gautam Dhar. The couple welcomed their first child, a boy, on 10 May 2024.

Career

Television (2008–2010)

Yami moved to Mumbai at 20 to pursue acting, debuting on television with Chand Ke Paar Chalo. She also starred in Raajkumar Aaryyan and gained fame with Yeh Pyar Na Hoga Kam. She appeared in reality shows like Meethi Choori No 1 and Kitchen Champion.

Film Debut and Early Work (2009–2018)

Yami’s film debut was in the 2009 Kannada film Ullasa Utsaha. She made her Bollywood debut with Vicky Donor in 2012, earning critical acclaim and commercial success. After a brief hiatus, she returned in 2014 with Total Siyappa and Action Jackson. In 2015, she starred in the successful thriller Badlapur.

In 2016, she appeared in Sanam Re and Junooniyat, both of which did not perform well. In 2017, she starred in Kaabil, a financial success, and had a brief role in Sarkar 3. Her next film, Batti Gul Meter Chalu (2018), also received mixed reviews.

Breakthrough and Success (2019–Present)

Yami’s breakthrough came with Uri: The Surgical Strike (2019), where she played an intelligence officer. The film was a massive success, followed by another hit, Bala, where her performance was highly praised. She continued to appear in films like Ginny Weds Sunny (2020), Bhoot Police (2021), A Thursday (2022), and Dasvi (2022), receiving positive reviews for her roles.

In 2023, Yami starred in Lost and Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga, both receiving positive reviews. Her role in OMG 2 (2023) earned her a Filmfare nomination for Best Supporting Actress. In 2024, she reunited with Aditya Dhar for the political thriller Article 370, a commercial success despite mixed critical reception.
