Sushant Singh Rajput (21 January 1986 – 14 June 2020) was a prominent Indian actor known for his work in Hindi cinema. He starred in several commercially successful films, including “M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story” (2016), “Kedarnath” (2018), and “Chhichhore” (2019). Rajput received a Screen Award and three Filmfare Award nominations and appeared on Forbes India’s Celebrity 100 list twice.

Early Life and Education

Rajput was born in Patna, Bihar, to Krishna Kumar Singh and Usha Singh. He had four sisters, including Mitu Singh, a state-level cricketer. Following his mother’s death in 2002, his family moved to Delhi, where he completed his schooling at Kulachi Hansraj Model School. He was an avid reader and excelled in astrophysics, winning the National Olympiad in Physics. Rajput pursued mechanical engineering at Delhi College of Engineering but dropped out to pursue a career in acting and dancing.

Television

Rajput’s acting career began with the TV series “Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil” (2008), but his breakthrough came with the lead role in “Pavitra Rishta” (2009–2011). He won several awards for his performance, including the Indian Television Academy Award for Best Actor.

Film Debut and Rise to Fame

Rajput transitioned to Bollywood with “Kai Po Che!” (2013), which was both a critical and commercial success. He followed this with notable roles in “Shuddh Desi Romance” (2013) and the highest-grossing film of his career, “PK” (2014). His portrayal of Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni in “M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story” (2016) earned him widespread acclaim and several award nominations.

Subsequent Films

Rajput continued to star in significant films such as “Raabta” (2017), “Kedarnath” (2018), and “Chhichhore” (2019). “Kedarnath” featured him as a Muslim porter who saves pilgrims during the Uttarakhand floods, while “Chhichhore” tackled the pressures of academic success.

Controversies and Death

Rajput died by suicide at his home in Mumbai on 14 June 2020, at the age of 34. His death sparked numerous controversies, including allegations of drug use and legal battles involving his associates and family. His final film, “Dil Bechara” (2020), was released posthumously on Hotstar.
