Kapoor is the daughter of actor Shakti Kapoor. She made her acting debut with a minor role in the 2010 film Teen Patti and gained her first leading role in Luv Ka The End (2011), earning the Stardust Award for Best Actress. Her breakthrough came with the romantic musical Aashiqui 2 (2013), for which she received a Filmfare Award nomination for Best Actress. Kapoor grew up in a Marathi cultural environment and attended Jamnabai Narsee School, later moving to the American School of Bombay where she befriended actor Varun Dhawan and others.

Kapoor initially enrolled at Boston University to study psychology but left to pursue her acting career after being cast in Teen Patti. She was also offered her first film role by Salman Khan at the age of 16, which she declined to focus on her education.
