Alia Bhatt born 15 March 1993 is a British actress of Indian descent known for her work in Hindi films. She has received numerous awards, including a National Film Award and six Filmfare Awards. In 2022, Time magazine awarded her the Time100 Impact Award, and she was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2024.
Born to filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt and actress Soni Razdan, Bhatt made her acting debut as a child in the thriller Sangharsh (1999). Her first leading role was in Karan Johar’s teen film Student of the Year (2012). She gained critical acclaim for her roles in Highway (2014), Udta Punjab (2016), Raazi (2018), Gully Boy (2019), and Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022), the latter earning her a National Film Award for Best Actress. Early Life and Background
Born on 15 March 1993, Alia Bhatt is the daughter of filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt and actress Soni Razdan. She holds British citizenship and has a diverse heritage, with her father being of Gujarati descent and her mother of Kashmiri Pandit and British-German ancestry. Bhatt grew up in Mumbai with her elder sister Shaheen and two half-siblings, Pooja and Rahul Bhatt. Despite her father’s absence during much of her childhood, Bhatt developed a closer relationship with him after becoming an actress.
Bhatt attended Jamnabai Narsee School but left after her twelfth grade to pursue acting. She expressed an early interest in acting and took dance lessons at Shiamak Davar’s institute. Her first acting role was in Sangharsh (1999), and she later auditioned for and was cast in several other roles, though not all projects came to fruition.

Early Work (2012–2015)
Bhatt’s first leading role was in Student of the Year (2012), directed by Karan Johar. Although her performance received mixed reviews, the film was a commercial success. She sought more challenging roles and found one in Imtiaz Ali’s Highway (2014), for which she won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress. She continued to collaborate with Dharma Productions, starring in 2 States and Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania (both 2014), both of which were commercially successful.
Career Progression (2016–2021)
In 2016, Bhatt starred in Kapoor & Sons and Udta Punjab, the latter earning her critical acclaim and a Filmfare Award for Best Actress. She also starred in Dear Zindagi (2016), receiving praise for her performance. Bhatt’s successful run continued with films like Badrinath Ki Dulhania (2017) and Raazi (2018), the latter of which won her another Filmfare Award for Best Actress.
In 2019, she launched Eternal Sunshine Productions and starred in Gully Boy, which became her highest-grossing release at that point. However, her subsequent films, Kalank (2019) and Sadak 2 (2020), did not perform well commercially.

Bhatt achieved further success with Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022), for which she won the National Film Award for Best Actress.
